The Local Church
Sought, Seeking and Supplied
I was found by those who did not seek Me, I revealed myself to those who did not ask for Me. (Rom. 10:20) This verse is my experience. When I was a student at UT I was very empty. I hoped to fill the void by finding the answer to two of the most commonly asked questions in college: What should I major in? and Who should I marry? Eventually I came to the conclusion that the only one who could help me with this quest was God. I simply wanted the answers; I never dreamed that I'd find Him, Jesus Christ, a living Person.
I was first introduced to Jesus Christ through a Christian girl in my dormitory. She preached the gospel to me and I received the Lord Jesus as my Savior and life that very day. Although I was saved during my freshman year at UT, I made very little spiritual progress for two years and became frustrated because I could not understand the Bible. It was a closed book to me. When I would hear other Christians speak of the Scriptures enthusiastically, I couldn't relate because I didn't have that same joy.
Then I met some Christians who met with the local church and attended a Bible study with them. I was very impressed with the truth being expounded by them. Before long I too was enjoying the Word and genuinely seeking the One who had faithfully sought me. The Bible seemed alive; I couldn't get enough. Slowly my self-invented concepts were replaced by the true revelation of Jesus Christ in the New Testament.
Through the years I have found that no matter how real the Lord Jesus is to me while I am at home with my family, driving in the car, or teaching at school, nothing compares to my time with the other brothers and sisters in Christ. The more I gather with the other brothers and sisters in the church in Austin, the more His presence and speaking are real to me.
I'm not what I would call a particularly strong believer, but with others I find that I am enriched and supplied to live the Christian life.
